Thame & District

Walks - Day

Status:Active, open to new members
Leader:
When: Monthly on Tuesday mornings
4th Tuesday of the month starting at 9.30 am
Venue: Scout Hut

The Group normally meets at the Scout Hut, but please let the Group Leader know in advance if you will be joining the walk and also if you intend to drive direct to the starting point.

Walks are generally circular and around 8 to 9 miles long, but sometimes shorter in the winter months (about 7 - 8 miles). We have tackled linear walks in the past when we walked the Ridgeway in sections, and we may do so again. We try to start any walks within a 45 minute drive of Thame, but will occasionally tackle a walk a little further afield.

The Group has plenty of room and would welcome new members.

For more information please contact Danièle Manktelow (Group Leader-Walks-Day)

24th FebruaryA 7.5 mile walk around Blenheim mostly along tarmacked paths or stony tracks. Some footpaths through woods and across fields.Daniele Manktelow
24th MarchAn 8 mile circular walk from Penn to Coleshill and back through Winchmore Hill.   There is one hill, no stiles and the terrain is a mix of farm land and woods.  The walk follows part of the Chiltern Way and offers some lovely views.  The woods will be full of bluebells, but, unfortunately, too early for this walk!  There is one very muddy patch.    The walk will start from the pond opposite Red Lion pub in Penn.  Bridget and Michael Weeks
28th AprilAn undulating 8½ mile walk starting at Thornhill P&R Car Park.  It ascends through the C.S. Lewis Nature Reserve before arriving at Shotover Country Park, then visits Brasenose Wood, before heading to Horspath. After a scenic route through Littleworth Nature Reserve there's a circuit passed Shotover House on the way back to the Shotover Plain for the return to the start.  Hopefully the bluebells will still be out!  We meet at the Scout Hut at 9:30am for car sharing. Ruth Cornish
26th MayThis walk is cancalled due to the weather (heat).

The May walk starts from the recreation ground car park in High St, Ewelme (free).

This lovely walk is 7 and 1/2 miles long on good paths. Ewelme is an interesting, historic village, and the church is well worth a visit. There are two longish hills but we would stop for drinks after the first and for lunch after the second. You could bring your own drinks, or if you prefer, the church at Swincombe has a kettle, tea bags and coffee, with biscuits and flapjack for a small charge. Lunch is likely to be sitting on the ground on an earthwork under shading trees, so some form of rear padding would be worthwhile. The community run shop in Ewelme serves refreshments, and a diversion past there gives the chance to see the pretty village pond with a spring rising into it (The King's Pool).

23rd JunePostponed due to heat. Replaced by 5 mile circular woodland walk around Chinnor and Bledlow.

The day walk this month is an 8 mile circular walk starting in Bernwood Forest and following some woodland paths before leaving the woods for open meadows.  We will skirt around both Forest Hill and Stanton St John and return along paths past Danesbrook Farm.  There are some short stretches along minor roads, but most of the walking is in open countryside along tracks and footpaths with some fine views. There are some beautiful meadows along the route.  Some of the paths are through long grass, so wearing shorts might not be very comfortable.  It is an almost flat walk, with not a gentle undulation in sight! There is one stile, interestingly topped by a gate.
